I pop in from time to time, but chat is really not active here unless you prompt the board by starting a thread saying your in.

Years ago at Jediism we used to have regularly scheduled chats. Seems like they were Thursdays at 8pm EST and Saturdays at 12pm EST. Of course people were usually in the chat at night, but those were times that we actively encouraged people to log in and hang out. Might be something to consider doing here.

Adam, there's another minor problem, too. ALL caps are reduced to small letters. It should go low on your list, but it would be nice to eventually be able to use caps.

That one I do know about and getting the developers to look at it has not been working well at all. It's something I am eventually going to sit down and go through the coding.

OK, how about this one then? Could we get an auditory alert for posts? I like to hang out in chat while doing other things, but when people come in, they think I forgot to log out because I don't respond right away. If the computer beeped when they post, I'd know to go check. Again, not a big deal, but something to add to the wish list.

I will definitely look into that, I am pretty sure it is an option that is just disabled by default but will check it out.

Funny Rynjin :) just asking how could you miss that??? :) I will look into your idea Myrrden and hope it is still active. Just like jdmcowan I am one who likes to hang around chat all day. Does anybody when is this site is most active because if I am going to post a time the more the better. I am going to need a laptop because I only have a hour a day right now but I will be their nearly all day but most of the time I will be playing games so I second jdmcowan on the alert but take you time no big rush.
May the force be with us and may we be with the force

Honestly the activity of this forum has only Just picked up in this last month...two? Your best bet is just by starting a thread saying "Hey I am on! Join me!"
Another option is by convincing Adam to put up a "who's in chat" box so that people can see when someone is in...and not have to guess when they might be....

Actually, if you go to the main forums page, it does say, at the bottom, who's in chat. I remember seeing that a while ago, but I so seldom actually go to the main forums page.

Me either...perhaps move it to the portal page and up where you can actually see it?

I can look into making it more noticeable. I'll be checking these things out this weekend! As always let us know on any suggestions as we will consider any suggestions made as this site is here for everyone.

cool. Here's a question, does anybody how of any chat that IS still popular and used?
AdamGolfer

A number of sites don't offer one and the ones that do it really depends. I think with everyone's schedules it is just becoming more difficult to organize group chats. Most people seem to chat through the IM clients like YIM, AIM, etc.

Is there any chance we can move the notification of the number of people in chat to the top of the forum under our other notifications? That way more people are likely to see someone's in chat and log in.
Even still, most of the time I don't think a lot of the people are on the forum at the same time.
And as other people mentioned, I would also love a sound notification when people make a new post. :p

LOL...actually web design for me I don't consider work as I do it for fun, though I do run a small web design business. I'm at home, relaxing, with the laptop, I don't mind at all..lol.

must be nice having your own business in this economy and not be going broke...

Well, as I said, it's small..lol, I have been up for almost 2 years and I have done about 18 sites, and a number of those sites were made for free to help build my portfolio. I have teamed up with a local digital phone company and our philosophy is not to charge an outrageous price which is what most web designers ask for, though for some of them this is their livelihood. I go for the people that just can't swing those prices, I would rather have 10 customers paying $100 then 4 paying a couple thousand dollars. It's just a little side enjoyment I have that allows me to make a few bucks to cover all the other stuff I do on the web and a little extra. I am very fortunate though to have a wonderful job as a teacher that is my primary income which I wouldn't trade for the world. Anyway, carry on as I don't want to bore people with my side ventures and such...LOL.

lol...when i worked at compusa my friend would pick up side jobs from his dad(who was a website designer) one of the jobs my friend got was to design the website for raymond james & associates(the company who's name is on the stadium the bucs play in) he made 5k for that....it made me wish i knew how to do it....of course now i'm taking i.t. classes and web design is required....i think it definately takes a special kind of person to be a teacher...especially the way kids are these days(where they have no respect for authority, and are free from discipline)
AdamGolfer
01-30-2010, 04:15 PM
Actually, you might be surprised, kids have a very good respect and work ethic. The thing is, you don't really start seeing it in most boys till they hit about 9th or 10th grade and you start seeing it in the girls about a year or two before that, on average. Now kids in 5th through 7th grade, I can agree with that absolutely, but it's a part of growing up..lol. Put them in a structured environment with consequences and they thrive.
As far as web design, I hope someday to get a project that size, in time I know I will. It has definitely taken me a number of years to get where I am now as I am completely self-taught...lol, makes it fun though!

most of the highschool aged kids around here have juvenile records as long as my arm...my neighbors daughter was caught shooting up in her room with her friends....i do agree that kids need structure and discipline....unfortunately in many states discipline is no longer allowed...with no consequences for their actions or fear of consequences there is little that can be done to control them....just last month a 14 year old girl and her 15 year old boyfriend lit her mother on fire while she was asleep...they're talking about putting them on trial as juveniles....they should be tried as adults...it was an adult crime...oh well...such is the shambles of the legal system
i work delivering the paper when not in classes(crappy job that's why im in classes) and i see a different story in the paper everyday about "youth gone wild"...it's sad...for every good kid there's a half dozen wannabe thugs, pimps and gangstas....

Adam, just thought I'd let you know that while I was in the chat it said that I left, then about ten minutes later said that I joined the room. I didn't close it out, but I'm not sure if I was actually kicked out of it, because it was just Brandel and I in there... and we weren't very talkative.
